Major Gerry Long

(UK Army) was commissioned into 3rd Battalion, The Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment (3 PWRR) in June 2006. This followed twenty-four years’ service in the Parachute Regiment having held a variety of posts in the 1st Battalion. His operational deployments include a dozen to Northern Ireland which included working in a coun- ter-terrorist, liaising with Special Branch as well as assistance to normal policing; deployments also to Iraq, which included the invasion in 2003; and two deployments to Afghanistan lately to the Afghan National Officers Academy (ANAOA) in Kabul as a Mentor. During his time with 3 PWRR, he served as the Officer Commanding (OC) the Regimental Recruiting & Mentoring Team and also as OC A (Queens Royal Surreys) Company. During his tenure he developed what was seen as best practice for Recruit Training in the Army Reserve and also undertook developing the Junior Non-Commissioned Officers (JNCO) of the Battalion. For his work in Recruiting and JNCO development he was awarded the MBE in the 2015 New Year’s Honours’ List.
